Cortino
The town of Cortino, seat of the municipality, is located at an altitude of 1012 meters above sea level, at the foot of the Laga Mountains, on a rocky spur overlooking the valley. Most of the buildings are from the 19th century and modern times, but some have elements of older houses dating back to the 16th century, such as inscriptions or architraves with friezes such as a cross enclosed by a ray of dots.
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, present since 1324 and built in stone, has been significantly renovated both externally and internally. The small church of San Gaetano, dating back to the nineteenth century and located near the main square, has been transformed into a private home.
In the past, between Cortino, Vallevaccaro and Altovia there were the castles of Morelli and Zingano (the latter near the watercourse of the same name). Both were completely destroyed in the earthquake of 1703, in the very violent shock of February 2nd.
From Cortino begins one of the sections of the "Italia" path which allows you to admire the deer wildlife area (approximately six hectares in area), also populated with roe deer, chamois and fallow deer and allows you to cross and admire the marvelous Fir of Cortino, a of the few remaining nuclei of silver fir present in central-southern Italy.
Cortino is also home to the WWF Environmental Education Centre, which is busy organizing numerous initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the mountains.
