Comignano
Comignano is a hamlet of Cortino located on the slopes of Colle Micedi (1200 m). The houses in the town, mainly nineteenth-century or modern, are built of stone. The original medieval town, located slightly further down the valley, was near the church of S. Antimo, now disappeared, and the church of S. Pietro a "Bollenum". The current church of S. Pietro has a bell tower on the façade, but does not present stylistic characteristics that allow a precise dating.
In the "Case dafoot" area, near the cemetery, in an old house, you can observe some construction elements of the Laga, such as the corners carved with large sculpted blocks. On the ashlar of the arch key on the bed door there is a 16th century coat of arms with a rampant lion (probably the coat of arms of the Acquaviva house), while on the architrave of the door on the near side the date 1535 is carved.
The inhabitants of Comignano lived partly thanks to sheep breeding and partly thanks to the profession of "sawyers" (ancient "marangonari"), who cut the sleepers used for the construction of the railway lines in southern Italy.
The etymology of the toponym could derive from the Greek "Comao", land producing green herbs.
