The plateaus of transhumance
Starting from the town of Cortino, follow the SP47 towards Teramo until you reach the intersection with the SS80 and follow it towards Montorio al Vomano. At the crossroads for Rocciano, the road begins to descend and you come across a roadman's house with a fountain. After a short uphill stretch of about 500 m long, you arrive at the crossroads for Collevecchio and enter the state road again to descend to the town of Montorio al Vomano, known for its scenic and cultural beauty and starting point for the cycling race " Tour of the Gran Sasso".
We continue towards the town of San Giorgio in the municipality of Crognaleto, with a splendid panorama of the Gran Sasso mountains. Along the way, you cross the alpine landscape, where you can come across flocks of sheep or goats, and you can admire the view that extends to the Adriatic Sea. After passing Rocca Roseto, a historic fortification, you arrive at the Piano Roseto prairies, part of the ancient Tratturo della Doganella d'Abruzzo.
We begin to descend towards Cortino, crossing landscapes that present geological stratifications of marl and sandstone known as the Laga Formation. After passing Fonte Palumbo, you arrive at Pagliaroli, where the remains of an ancient temple dating back to the 3rd-2nd century BC were discovered near the church of San Salvatore. After a stop to quench your thirst at the fountain or the bar, you continue towards Cortino, first crossing the hamlet of Cunetta, then skirting Valle San Giovanni, Travazzano, Villa Tordinia and finally Cortino, where the route ends.
