Discovering the Mills of Cortino
Starting from Cortino, through the SP47 we head towards Comignano, here we find the first of the mills present in the Cortino area.
The construction consists of a single room with the millstone clearly visible on the site. The roof of the mill has collapsed, while the perimeter walls in squared stone blocks are still in good condition. In the rear part and upstream of the mill there is a large basin for the "refogge". The water from the "Fiumicello" that powered the mill was scarce.
We continue on the SP47 and before arriving in Pagliaroli we turn left towards Lame.
Here we find another mill abandoned for a long time, of which we can still see some perimeter walls. The "mouth" of the "courier" is still visible, but unfortunately for a short time due to the precarious static situation of the ruin.
Continuing on the SP47 we head to Padula where we find the third mill in the municipality of Cortino. The millstone is still visible on site, the vault of the "courier" has suffered a partial collapse while the trace of the "gora" is clearly visible and extends up to the river lock, dug mostly out of the rock. Furthermore, a small reservoir for the "refogge" is also visible with a height of the water fall of about ten meters. The roof of the building has completely collapsed, but some parts of the perimeter walls are still standing.
From Padula, we take the SP47 again and follow it backwards until we reach Servillo where we find the remains of another ancient mill. Even today it is possible to see the millstone, which is partially covered by debris. The mill building, which consisted of a studio apartment, has its roof collapsed, but the oak beams are still visible. The perimeter walls are in good condition. Continuing on the SP47 we reach the Faieto Mill.
The mill has two millstones and in the "courier" there are still the "ritrecini", covered in mud and built in cast iron and steel. In the room there are also the "covering boxes", the "flours" and the "hoppers", all in good condition. The structure also includes the miller's house, connected to the mill via a small internal staircase. The roof and walls are still in good condition and there are no structural collapses.
Continuing the itinerary along the SP47, after leaving the Faieto mill, we head towards the Casanova Mill. This site, known for its rustic charm and centuries-old history, is located in a small valley surrounded by dense forests that contribute to an atmosphere of serene isolation. The Casanova mill features a well-preserved stone structure, with the original millstones still in place and functioning, although only used during demonstrations or special events. The roof has been recently restored, maintaining the traditional appearance with terracotta tiles. A peculiarity of this mill is its large water wheel, still active, which is located along the watercourse that crosses the site. A small wooden bridge allows you to cross the stream and offers a picturesque view of the mill against the wooded landscape.
